21 January 2020 – Amid widespread protests and a sharply deteriorating economic situation, Hassan Diab is appointed as Prime Minister and forms a 20 Ministers government of which 6 are women: Minister of Labor Lamia Yammine, Justice Minister Marie-Claude Najem, Defense Minister Zeina Akar, Minister of Youth and Sports Vartie Ohanian, Minister of Information Manal Abdul-Samad and Minister of Displaced Ghada Shreim
Zeina Akar is the first woman to be appointed Defense Minister in an Arab League nation.
The government did not include a Ministry of State for Women’s Affairs or Women’s Empowerment.
